White Oak Kitchen Cabinets in Chicago: Rift, Quarter-Sawn or Plain-Sawn, and What They Cost
White oak is the wood most of our Chicago clients ask for right now, and for good reason: it's hard, it handles a wet kitchen better than red oak, and it looks right in a vintage greystone or a glass high-rise. Here's what it costs in 2026, how the way the log is cut changes the look, and the finish choices that decide how it ages.
How much do white oak kitchen cabinets cost in Chicago?
Custom white oak kitchen cabinets in Chicago run about $700–$900 per linear foot in 2026, inside the $500–$1,200 per linear foot installed range for custom cabinetry. Rift-sawn and quarter-sawn white oak sit at the top of that range because each log yields fewer of those straight-grained boards.
- White oak, per linear foot: the species price in our cost guide. $700–$900
- Custom cabinetry, installed: the full range for any species and finish. $500–$1,200/LF
- Illinois-made lead time: from approved drawings to delivery. 4–6 weeks
- Imported cabinets: carry a Section 232 tariff that Illinois-made cabinets don't. 25%
- The look you're paying for: rift-sawn for straight, modern grain; quarter-sawn for flecked, traditional grain; plain-sawn for the classic "cathedral" pattern at the lowest cost.
Why white oak and not red oak?
White oak is harder and more water-resistant than red oak, which matters in a kitchen. It rates about 1,350 lbf on the Janka hardness scale, and its pores are plugged with tyloses, small bubble-like structures that keep water from travelling into the wood; red oak doesn't have them, according to The Wood Database. That is why white oak has been used for boats and barrels for centuries, and why it holds up next to a sink and a dishwasher.
The color is different too. White oak reads as a warm tan with a slightly olive cast; red oak leans pink. That quieter tone is what lets white oak sit beside white quartz, black hardware or a colored lacquer without fighting it, and it's a big part of why white oak is the most requested cabinet wood in the kitchens we design. See how it compares with other species in our Chicago custom cabinet cost guide.
Rift-sawn vs quarter-sawn vs plain-sawn white oak
The same tree gives three very different cabinet doors depending on the angle the log is cut to its growth rings. This is the decision that changes the look most, so it's worth seeing full-size doors of each before you order.
| Cut | What the grain looks like | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Rift-sawn | Tight, straight, parallel lines; very calm | Modern slab doors, long runs, high-rise kitchens |
| Quarter-sawn | Straight grain with shimmering "ray fleck" | Traditional, Arts & Crafts, vintage homes |
| Plain-sawn | Wide "cathedral" arches and more movement | Rustic or classic shaker looks, tighter budgets |
Rift and quarter-sawn boards are cut across the growth rings, so a log yields fewer of them; that is why they cost more than plain-sawn. Quarter-sawn white oak's ray fleck is its signature, and it is prominent enough to change the feel of a whole room.
What white oak costs next to other cabinet woods
Per linear foot, white oak sits in the middle of the premium hardwoods. These are the same species ranges we publish in our cost guide, so the numbers match everywhere on our site:
| Wood | Per linear foot | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Maple | $600–$800 | Smooth, even grain; the classic paint-grade hardwood |
| White oak | $700–$900 | Hard, water-resistant, warm tan; the 2026 favorite |
| Cherry | $750–$950 | Darkens to a deep red-brown with light |
| Walnut | $800–$1,000 | Rich chocolate tone; the luxury accent wood |
Cabinet pricing per linear foot, 2026, from our Chicago custom kitchen cabinet cost guide. Installed custom cabinetry runs $500–$1,200 per linear foot overall. Imported cabinets carry a 25% Section 232 tariff, in force since October 14, 2025 and scheduled to rise to 50% on January 1, 2027, per Thompson Hine's tariff summary; our Illinois-made cabinetry does not.
Which white oak finishes age well?
The finish decides what your cabinets look like in five years, not just on install day. All wood changes color in light, and big Chicago high-rise windows speed that up, so choose expecting the wood to warm a little over time.
A water-based clear coat keeps white oak close to its raw, pale tan. It's the look most people picture when they say "white oak kitchen," and it stays lighter longer than an oil-based finish.

- AgesWarms slowly

A light stain or a smoked (fumed) finish deepens the tone; cerusing rubs white into the open grain for a limed, European look. These choices hide the natural warming better and suit darker, moodier kitchens.

Always approve the finish on a real sample door, in your own kitchen light, before the order goes in. A finish that looks perfect under showroom lights can read yellow next to a north-facing window.
How we're using white oak in a Chicago high-rise right now
Rift-sawn white oak uppers over high-gloss white bases
In a Lakeshore East condo kitchen we're building now, the owners wanted warmth without a wall of wood. The answer was rift-sawn white oak on the upper cabinets, high-gloss white lacquer on the base cabinets, and a Calacatta quartz countertop with a full-height slab backsplash, all Illinois-built. The straight rift grain keeps the kitchen calm against the city view, while the white bases keep the room bright. Two-tone like this also costs less than an all-oak kitchen of the same size, because the oak is where the eye lands.
Two other combinations we see often: white oak islands with painted perimeter cabinets in vintage greystones, and white oak with panel-ready appliances so the refrigerator and dishwasher disappear into the grain. You can hold full-size white oak doors next to stone and hardware at our Lincoln Park design studio.
How to choose white oak cabinets without regrets
- 1See full-size doors, not swatchesGrain looks completely different on a 30-inch door than on a 4-inch chip. Compare rift, quarter-sawn and plain-sawn side by side.
- 2Pick the cut before the finishThe cut sets the character; the finish only tunes the color. Decide rift, quarter or plain first.
- 3Approve the finish in your own lightTake a finished sample home. North light, south light and LED under-cabinet lighting all change how white oak reads.
- 4Plan the grain across the runFor slab doors, ask for sequence-matched veneer so the grain flows from door to door instead of jumping.
- 5Check where the boxes are builtIllinois-made cabinetry arrives in 4 to 6 weeks and carries no import tariff; our boxes are plywood with Blum soft-close hardware. Our custom cabinets page has the full pricing table.

White oak kitchen cabinets FAQ
How much do white oak kitchen cabinets cost in Chicago?
Custom white oak kitchen cabinets in Chicago cost about $700 to $900 per linear foot in 2026, within the $500 to $1,200 per linear foot installed range for custom cabinetry. Rift-sawn and quarter-sawn white oak cost more than plain-sawn because each log yields fewer of those boards.
What is the difference between rift-sawn and quarter-sawn white oak?
Rift-sawn white oak has tight, straight, parallel grain with almost no figure, which suits modern slab doors. Quarter-sawn white oak also has straight grain but shows ray fleck, a shimmering pattern across the grain that suits traditional and vintage kitchens.
Is white oak better than red oak for kitchen cabinets?
For most kitchens, yes. White oak is slightly harder, about 1,350 lbf on the Janka scale, and its pores are sealed by tyloses that resist water, which red oak lacks; it also has a neutral tan color instead of red oak's pink tone.
Do white oak cabinets turn yellow over time?
All wood warms in light, and white oak under an oil-based finish ambers more noticeably. A water-based clear matte finish keeps it closest to its natural pale tan for longer, and stained or smoked finishes hide the change best.
How long do custom white oak cabinets take in Chicago?
Our Illinois-made white oak cabinetry is delivered 4 to 6 weeks after you approve the drawings, and a full kitchen project runs 8 to 14 weeks from signed proposal to the last drawer front. Imported custom lines typically take 10 to 16 weeks and carry a 25% import tariff.
Are white oak cabinets a good choice for a Chicago condo?
Yes. White oak's calm grain suits high-rise kitchens with big windows, and rift-sawn slab doors keep a small kitchen from feeling busy. Pairing white oak uppers with painted or lacquered bases is a popular way to add warmth without a wall of wood.
